We at ETPCS are thrilled to be gearing up to attend the U.S. Department of Energy, Oak Ridge Office 2016 Health Fair this Thursday! A lot of folks don’t know that their long term care and other insurance benefits can include personal care services like the help we offer seniors in East Tennessee at East Tennessee Personal Care Services. This event is Thursday, November 3rd from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the ORO Conference Center located in Building 2714-G, at 103 Lea Way, Oak Ridge, Tennessee. We look forward to seeing you all there! However, despite these benefits, seniors also need to take precautions in order to protect their health and happiness. One of the leading causes of injury among senior citizens is falling. However, there’s no need to fret; there are plenty of ways to prevent slips, spills, and falls in the house. Take precautions You can prevent most falls by simply taking basic measures around the house to minimize them. For example: Keep rooms and paths free of clutter and debris that can get underfoot. Keep rooms well-lit with bright lighting in order to avoid unseen hazards. Wear shoes or slippers with rubber soles indoors is a great idea to help with traction, and avoid walking in socks or stockings, particularly on smooth surfaces. Ensure that any rugs in the house have skid-proof backs or are secured to the floor, and be sure to have a nonskid bath mat. Purchase assistive devices and tools Beyond the precautionary measures just listed, it’s a good idea to have some devices around the house to help prevent accidents. Canes and walkers are always a good option, providing support and mobility. Make sure these have a solid rubber tip to ensure maximum grip and safety. CADES (Concord Adult Day Enrichment Services) is proud to announce the Harvest Moon Folk Fest Concert and Silent Auction October 16th to raise awareness of seniors with Alzheimer’s. This family-friendly event helps CADES continue to fund their work as a adult day care agency, providing care and activities for seniors and assisting their loved ones in delaying early institutional placement so seniors can stay in their homes longer. Their facility offers visits with a therapy dog, health checks, games, arts and crafts, and other activities for seniors. Donors, seniors, and music lovers will enjoy the musical styling of the Mt. Le Conte Jug Band performing good time Americana music on Sunday, Oct. 16 th at 6:30 p.m. at Concord Methodist Church, 11020 Roane Drive in Farragut. There will be a silent auction as well. “This is a great opportunity to give back to seniors in our community and hear a really kickin’ band,” said CADES board member Penny Bandy. “As the owner of East Tennessee Personal Care Service, I work with seniors everyday. They deserve the opportunity to age gracefully, and CADES helps them to lead a richer life.” Tickets are $20 or $200 for a reserved table with 10 tickets.
